Household Water Filter Empty Household Water Filter

I believe I have seen some water softener tanks or filter systems in a couple of garages when the resident has had their garage door open. I know where the outside water valve is. Where is the main line coming into the line that would be the inlet to a water softner or water filter system? Someone taking a photo would be a big help. Thanks
