slower than DSL and certain times slower than dial-up Shocked the yahoo groups posted this topic awhile back, someone suggested a rebooting, we tried but doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/.
Post your Down and Up speeds.
In the past I hit at least ~12000 kbps Down/can't remember the Up speed when testing with San Jose.
At 1 [point today, I only hit 2124 kbps Down/1620 kbps Up with San Jose. A second test about 5 minutes later yielded 11702 kbps Down/2300 kbps Up.

Remember cable modem service is shared. Other factors include what time you're using the internet (day or evening use compared to middle of the night when everyone is asleep and should have their computers off) and if there are major torrent users out there in our area.

Funny you recognized that. People just think it's a bunch of random letters with numbers. I'm just a fan of "exotic" weapons seen in movies and ones used by US Special Forces (all branches).

Anybody call in to comcast yet? I had 1 chat session on Sunday night, then I had to call in on Monday. My connection is up and down in terms of speed - sometimes it's decent, sometimes it's like dial-up. They will send a tech out this Thursday. Just wondering if anyone else here has complained to them about it.

I haven't complained lately. I did call a couple of weeks back but they gave me the usual song and dance. reboot my computer, modem, "oh, it's probably your wireless".

We need fiber!!!

Just curious if anybody's comcast internet service is better now. I b!tched and moaned to Comcast the past 2 nites and I actually got a good tech 1 nite, a dumb ass the second nite. Finally service totally went down Tues., 3/3/2009 around 12:45 am. This morning and so far this night, everything is fast as hell again. I talked to another comcast rep tonight and he said something about a server glitching/going down. Just wanted to see if everyone else is experiencing improved service now.

My service went out last night also.

I'd describe the performance as good. Not the fastest I've experienced but good enough not to complain.

So, for the past week or so, my Comcast download speed has been about 10% of the speed I expect for the service, pretty much any time during the day. I'm seeing less than 2mbps per second downloads regularly, and sometimes under 1mbps.

I have a Comcast tech coming out on Monday. I'll let you know how it goes.

My service has been slow lately. I really don't know what's going on. Resetting the modem doesn't seem to make a difference and Comcast claims that things are running fine. I hope you have better luck.

Should be an interesting discussion. I captured a few traceroutes to the machine in LA that I am accessing, and during the slow periods I see multisecond roundtrips between my machine and machines in their network. I really shouldn't see things greater than a couple of hundred milliseconds. So, when the tech drops by Monday to tell me that there is no issue, I'll have some data to share.

Re: Comcast internet access speed - How fast is yours?

Absolutely. The speed has been fluxing quite a bit for the past 30 days with it getting worst the last 2 weeks. Combined, we're on the internet at the very least, 6 hrs a day.

I have a program (Network Magic) that allows me test the speed between my router and my computer and the router and a site in SF. In the past week, between the router and SF, it has dropped off to non-existent and hovers below 300 when it should be near 10000. Called Comcast, they are coming out today, but the phone conversation yesterday was moronic. The "tech expert" tried to tell me that it was the Ethernet card/driver/etc in not only computer one, but computer two and the Tivo that were most likely at fault. When I told him about the program he said that Comcast can't guarantee the validity of such test and if I wanted, they would send someone out but it will cost me if it's my fault, and am I sure I want to have someone come out? I told him that others were complaining in the area and he said that wasn't his problem.

Even after I told him that I had been resetting the modem almost daily, he had me shut off the router while he was on the phone (which I get) and then shut off the computers as well (which I don't get) to reset them. He was really insulting, asking me to recheck everything to be sure I knew how to unplug the router and turn off my computers, then telling me that he could tell that I had shut them off from his end.

Then, after all that, he said he could see where my service had dropped off 2x in the last week alone and maybe there was something wrong with my service.

Does anyone have any idea when we'll have another choice besides Comcast cable (besides DSL)? AT&T or Sprint or Verizon fiber???

Re: Comcast internet access speed - How fast is yours?

The Comcast guy came by yesterday and gave us the details on these buildings. Apparently Shea used wires from the 1950s when they built the place. The wires coming to the complex is modern (for 1990s). The performance will differ depending on where you live within each courtyard. The box is in the middle of a spiral and as you get further from the center, the wires get longer and the performance drops off, so those on the outside far end of the spiral get the worst performance. There is a possibility of putting in an amplifier along the route but we would need to know how the place is wired - do they go through the attics or is it underground?

There is another factor in play. There is a department that determines the flow. Our neighborhood is managed by the Santa Clara office as of last year. The Head of the region is in San Jose. These two don't communicate with each other, nor do they care to. The department that determines the flow doesn't know that we are having problems (and we are, because there are quite a few calls for our complex, quite regularly), and unless the regional head lets them know, they won't correct the problem. The tech guys who come out can only note that the place is wired poorly and that the flow, when they measure it, is excellent.

By the way, the gas lines in the units are laid the same way, so if you live on an end unit, you cannot have a gas dryer because there isn't enough pressure to supply gas to the stove, water heater and dryer. We learned this a year and a half ago when we bought a gas dryer and had to exchange it for an electric one.

Huh, interesting info. I suppose upgrading the wiring is out of the question when newer technologies like WiMax might be around the corner. Any idea whether we can do anything to get the message across to both parties?

Just complain every time the service goes down or less than broadband speed, which is what we are paying for.

Rewiring the complex would be hundreds of thousands of dollars. One apt complex of about 100 units cost ~$200,000 at the minimum was what the Comcast guy told us.
